The Environmental League of Massachusetts Action Fund has endorsed Amaad Rivera of Springfield in the election for the Hampden State Senate district, a credit to his commitment to the environment.
“As a lifelong Springfield resident Amaad Rivera understands the environmental justice issues facing the district,” stated ELM Action Fund Executive Director Joe O’Brien. "He also knows that in cities like Springfield and across the state we need to build a clean energy economy that will power us into the future."
“Amaad Rivera truly understands the needs of his community,” said ELM Action Fund President Elizabeth Henry. “We need strong leaders like him in the State House who understand that we can protect our residents and have a strong economy and a healthy environment.”
Amaad has served as a City Councilor in Springfield, Director of Housing Policy for the MA Commission on Discrimination, and a Policy Advisor to U.S. Senator Ed Markey. Amaad is passionate about social justice. As a City Councilor he fought alongside local advocates against a new power plant that would have had disproportionate negative impacts on lower-income communities in the district.
“Environmental Justice is not just a buzzword, it has everyday impacts to the people of Hampden," said Rivera. "From ensuring we are prepared for the extreme weather from climate change like tornados, to saving money on energy costs and ensuring we have better quality air, we need to be leaders in 21st century clean energy policy. I am incredibly proud of this endorsement and look forward to supporting Hampden in being at the forefront of the environmental movement.”
Amaad attended Bentley University and has a master’s degree in education from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He also served in the AmeriCorps program. To learn more about Amaad, please visit his website at www.amaadrivera.com.
